6 Things You Must Do After Moving into a New Home

Moving into a new home is an exciting time, but it can quickly become overwhelming if you don’t know what steps to take next.

You’ve followed your moving checklist and executed a successful move, but now it’s time to organize your new space. This portion of the moving process can feel like a daunting chore without proper planning. Luckily, we’re here to help keep your head above water.

Keep reading to discover six of the most important tasks you should prioritize upon moving into a new home.

1. Inspect the House

You should perform a thorough inspection immediately upon moving into a new home. There’s no better time to complete a walkthrough than when your house is still relatively empty, so get this done before unpacking. Take a look around and verify that any agreed-upon repairs have been made and that everything is in working order. Here are a few specific features to examine:

  • Smoke detectors
  • Outlets
  • Light switches
  • Locks
  • Air filters
  • Circuit breakers
  • Shut-off valves

Contact your realtor immediately if you find any issues contradicting your sale agreement.

2. Childproof or Pet Proof

If you’re moving into a new home with pets or little kids, we recommend safety proofing as soon as possible. Immediately implement these precautions as you set up your furniture to keep everyone safe.

3. Set up Utilities

Utilities are an essential feature of your home, but it’s easy to forget about setting them up. Ideally, you should arrange for your utilities to be ready by the time you move in. On moving day, verify that your gas, electric, water, heating, cooling, internet, cable, phone, and any other services are in working order.

4. Clean the House from Top to Bottom

Hopefully, the previous owners cleaned their home upon moving out, but it’s still likely that they left some dirt behind. We understand that cleaning is probably the last thing you want to do after a big move, but you’ll be thankful for your efforts in the long run. Deep clean your house from top to bottom, scrubbing every surface in sight. Consider calling in professional cleaners if time isn’t on your side.

5. Unpack Essential Items First

As you begin unpacking, start with any essential items first. This includes, but is not limited to, kitchenware, toiletries, clothing, bedsheets, pet necessities, and towels. When packing, we recommend uniquely marking these boxes so that you can readily find them later.

6. Recycle Packing Materials

Unpacking will leave you with plenty of materials that can quickly overcrowd your house. Since you no longer need these items, recycle them or pass them along to another family needing moving supplies.
