5 Tips for Moving to a New Home in the Fall

Moving to a new home in the fall can be difficult as your schedule fills up with responsibilities, but you can make your move less stressful.

Work commitments, extracurricular activities, and a new school year can make fall a hectic season, but it’s still one of the very best times to move. Read on to learn how to make the best of your relocation during this beautiful time of year.

1. Clear Fallen Leaves

Fall foliage can make your moving day more beautiful but fallen leaves can be a nuisance when you’re walking back and forth all day. To prevent slips and falls, be sure to keep a broom and rake handy. Additionally, you don’t want people tracking wet leaves, mud, and dirt into your new clean home. To prevent flooring damage, put down a plastic covering and use floor mats when moving heavy furniture.

2. Declutter from Summer

As you box up your home in preparation for the big day, now is the perfect time to declutter from summer. Go through seasonal items such as swimwear, beach gear, and other summer essentials and get rid of anything you won’t need again next year. When summer rolls around again, you’ll be happy you took care of this now.

3. Plan for Inclement Weather

The pleasant climate of fall makes it one of the most flexible times to move; however, it’s still not immune to inclement weather. The weather can often be unpredictable during this time of year, so be prepared to postpone moving day if necessary. Hopefully, everything will go according to plan, but it’s a good idea to have a backup strategy just in case.

4. Set up Utilities Ahead of Time

There’s nothing worse than moving into a new home only to realize that you never set up the electricity and gas. It can take several days for utility providers to process new accounts, so we recommend reaching out at least a week before moving day. Fall temperatures fluctuate, so you’ll be thankful to have air conditioning and heater up and running on day one.

5. Plan Around the School Year

If you’re moving to a new home during the fall, chances are that your children will miss the first portion of the school year. Planning ahead is the key to making this transition as easy as possible for them. Find a new school well in advance, fill out any necessary paperwork, chat with the principal and your kids’ new teachers, and find more about the extracurricular activities the school offers. If they will be missing any school, ask their teacher for assignments they can work on until they arrive.
